CoTESOL Fall Convention
November 6-7th!
Keynote Speakers
Rooted in Voice, Ready for Action: Advocacy for the English Language Teaching Community
Jeff Hutchison, Director of Advocacy and Public Policy
TESOL International Association
Public policy shapes what is possible in our classrooms, programs, institutions, and communities—from federal funding and educator preparation to educational opportunity, language access, and civil rights. At a time when long-standing supports for English learners and the English language teaching profession are being weakened or placed at risk, advocacy is not separate from our work; it is one way we protect and advance it.
This keynote will connect federal and state policy to the daily realities of educators and learners, explore why the voices of ELT professionals matter in public decision-making, and offer practical ways to move from concern to action. Rooted in language, belonging, and community, participants will leave better equipped to speak up, engage others, and advocate—from the classroom to Congress.
Roots Grow Without Permission
Tania Hogan, Professor and Executive Director
The Bueno Center, University of Colorado Boulder
We will explore ways in which educators can build from multilingual learners’ linguistic and cultural roots, rather than ask them to earn belonging. Educators often find themselves trying to improve or adapt to systems they inherited. Drawing on BUENO’s work alongside students, educators and families, we will instead ask, what becomes possible when we reimagine those systems and grow something new together?
